How to reduce MTTR with AI

To reduce MTTR with AI, shorten the time between the alert and a person who knows why. Noci AI starts AI triage alongside paging from the first alert, its agents investigate with your telemetry and recent code changes, an AI voice agent phones the on-call engineer, and the bridge keeps a summary as the incident moves.

What actually slows an incident down?

MTTR, mean time to resolve, is the sum of many small waits. Before anyone fixes anything there is the alert that took a while to be noticed, the person who had to be found, the minutes spent gathering context, and the colleagues who joined late and asked what had happened. Fixing the fault is usually only part of the total, and often the shorter part.

AI is best placed to shorten the waits before the fix. It is not a way to skip the fix. For the difference between the measures, see MTTA vs MTTR.

Where does each wait come from, and what does Noci AI do about it?

The waitWhat Noci AI does
Not knowing if the alert mattersAI triage runs alongside paging from the first alert
Not knowing why it firedAgents investigate with your telemetry and your recent code changes
Reaching the right personAn AI voice agent phones the on-call engineer and briefs them on the incident
Catching everyone upThe bridge keeps a summary as the incident moves, and drafts status updates

Each row shortens a wait, not a decision. A person is still the one who decides what to do.

How does it work in order?

  1. The alert arrives. AI triage starts alongside paging from the first alert, so the page and the work begin together (or paging can wait for triage, if you choose).
  2. The agents investigate. They read your telemetry and your recent code changes and form a hypothesis, with the evidence behind it.
  3. The on-call engineer gets a call. An AI voice agent phones them and briefs them on the incident, so they pick up the phone and already know what is happening. How it works is in the AI voice agent for on-call.
  4. The bridge keeps the account. Noci AI runs the bridge in Slack, keeps a summary as the incident moves and drafts status updates for a person to read and post. For what such a summary holds, read what an AI incident timeline summary is.

What does AI not do to MTTR?

It does not make the fix shorter by itself, and it does not decide for you. The investigation gives you a hypothesis and the evidence, not a verdict, and a person judges it. You choose, step by step, whether an agent asks before it acts, so the speed you gain in the early minutes does not come from giving up the decisions that matter.

MTTR itself is also a blunt measure. One long incident can move the average more than many short ones. Treat it as a trend, and look beside it at the time it took for a person to know why.

How should you measure whether it helped?

Use your own history. Pick a few recent incidents and mark when the alert fired, when a person first had a useful fact, and when it was resolved. The middle gap is the one AI is meant to shorten. If it shrinks while the rest stays about the same, the tooling is doing its job. If only the average moves, something else changed.

Questions

What does MTTR measure?

Mean time to resolve: how long incidents take from the start to resolution, averaged. It is a useful trend for a team and a poor target for any one incident, because it mixes causes that have nothing to do with each other.

Where does AI shorten the time to resolve?

In the stretch between the alert and understanding. Triage sorts the alert, investigation gathers and reads the evidence, a call reaches the right person and a summary brings everyone else up to date.

Does AI fix the incident for me?

No. It shortens the time to a person who knows why. A person decides what to do about it, and you choose, step by step, whether an agent asks before it acts.

How should I measure whether it helped?

Use your own incident history: compare how long it took before the first useful fact reached a person, not only how long the whole incident took. A vendor's claim is not a substitute for your numbers.

What does the bridge do in Noci AI?

Noci AI runs the bridge in Slack: it keeps a summary as the incident moves and drafts status updates for a person to read and post.
